Kata "gender" secara leksikal berasal dari bahasa Inggris, atau"Geschlecht" bahasa Jerman), "Genre" (bahasa Perancis), "Genero" (bahasa Spanyol), yang artinya semacam jenis, ras dan kelas, dan "generare" (bahasa Latin) yang artinya prokreasi atau bisa juga bermakna ras atau jenis.

Sosiologi adalah studi tentang hubungan sosial manusia dan institusi. Materi pelajaran Sosiologi beragam, mulai dari kejahatan sampai agama, dari keluarga sampai negara, dari divisi ras dan kelas sosial sampai keyakinan bersama dan budaya umum, dan dari stabilitas sosial sampai perubahan radikal dalam seluruh masyarakat. Penyatuan subyek ini dalam beragam studi adalah tujuan sosiologi yaitu memahami bagaimana tindakan dan kesadaran manusia baik membentuk ataupun dibentuk oleh struktur  dan sosial budaya disekitarnya.

Sociology Music_ Sociomusicology

Sosiologi musik adalah studi tentang bagaimana manusia dan musik saling memberi dampak satu sama lain. Ini mencakup berbagai gagasan tentang bagaimana perubahan nilai-nilai sosial  dapat tercermin dalam musik populer dan budaya tertentu. Studi sosiologi musik ini mengamati  bagaimana dan mengapa kelompok budaya tertentu mengidentifikasi kuat dengan genre musik tertentu. Para sosiolog  yang fokus pada upaya ini mencoba mencari jawaban yang pasti tentang mengapa orang memiliki reaksi positif terhadap musik dan mengapa mereka terus mendengarkan jenis music favorit mereka itu.
